5 Useful Things to know about Etiquette in Dubai

Autumn has just arrived. And if there’s something we can be sure of, we’re in the right time to plan a journey to Dubai. In fact, December and January are the best moments of the year for travelling in this area.
I know  you are already dreaming about being there,  walking through the lovely Marina streets, looking at the Marina Torch and other amazing skyscrapers, taking pics of Burj Al-Arab by the beach, or climbing the Burj Khalifa after an afternoon at the Dubai Mall. The Mall of the Emirates could be an option, too.
This means it’s time to take your Dirhams and fly to the Emirates!
But… is it a safe destination? How am I supposed to behave when I’m there? Yes, I can see you thinking about these things as well.
This is why I decided to help you with an article about some etiquette rules in Dubai.

You are going to find plenty of these articles on line. The fact is, as I read them all, I actually didn’t find them to be really complete, to be honest.
So I decided to write this short guide based on my personal experience because I want to give you advice about what I did, so that you may have a good experience from every point of view. A great experience just how mine was. Here we go!

#1 Think About What You are Going to Wear, and Where

Respecting the social norms about what to wear does not mean wearing a cloak.
What really is important is to cover your cleavage, knees, elbows. Not that hard, isn’t it?
All you have to do is to think in advance when preparing your luggage.
Don’t make the same mistake of an Italian girl I met during a tour to the Old City. She had to wear a rain jacket she had in her backpack over her stretch sleeveless t-shirt! It was a very hot day and I bet it was awful. This fact pretty ruined her visit to the beautiful historical district – and her afternoon, too.
Still I wonder why she brought a rain jacket to a Middle East country anyway. Actually,  in Dubai they have 2 rainy days per year.

#2 Greetings and Presentations: Do What the Locals Do

Shaking hands is something you should be careful about. As a general rule, it’s good shaking hands at the first greeting or a the presentation, and not when leaving, as apparently there’s no need for that. This is a very easy and basic rule. Another basic tip is: shake hands after the locals do the first move. It works with men and women as well. It will perfectly work with the cheerful local girls you may meet in a tram, eager to give you (precious) advice about what to see in a given area, and where to start.
If we don’t have to make a Japanese bow at greetings in Dubai, still we should be careful about the subtle ways to break social norms!

#3 In Dubai You Don’t Have To Be Elegant All The Time!

Remember to be practical, for your best experience in this amazing city. I strongly recommend that you don’t make the huge mistake to think that you shall wear elegant clothes all the time. Unless this is what you normally do. The Emirates are a place where there’s always so much to visit and see, especially Dubai, so there will plenty of things you will want to do. Therefore I think you shouldn’t be scared about the luxury “aura” of this destination. Also, this is why you should  really put a pair of sneakers or flat sandals in your luggage!
Besides, I bet you are going to use the public transportation a lot, because of the long, long distances. Hence my advice is taking the tram whenever you get the chance to – plus, some stations are just gorgeous and worth a visit.
Useful annotation about the public transports: girls, have fun travelling on the ladies dedicated wagon, it’s just comfy!
Dear guys, do not enter that wagon unless you are manly accompanying your pregnant wife who also brings a baby carriage.
Otherwise some angry girls may call the police for this infraction – and there is literally going to be one policeman at every station. Fines might  be coming your way very fast if you do!

#4 Be Ready to Spend Your Days in a Cold Breeze

You are going to spend some time in a city that happens to have growth near a desert: this means that, unless you aren’t travelling to Dubai in the part of the year I recommended above, you are inevitably going to spend most of the time in the beautiful interiors of hotels, restaurants, malls.

Trust me about this: air conditioners are going to be definitely high. This is a very good reason to bring your pashmina with you, or to start wearing one! This is going to be very useful, too (see point 1).

#5 Dubai Malls are Just Great and We All Love Fashion, BUT…

Do not take pics of (or stare at) the locals! I know, I know, the women are wearing long, black clothes (niqabs and chadors) that are made in some amazing designers’ fabrics, with  logos and all. Some of them are beautifully closed on their back with laces with diamonds. We all love fashion, but for any reason never take pics of them when you are at the mall! It’s unfair – and forbidden, too. Not strictly forbidden, but still forbidden.

Another important annotation: I am aware of the fact you have probably seen  some popular pics of women posing in a boutique, wearing a colorful silk foulard as a ḥijāb during their shopping.
They say it’s in Dubai. Probably it’s not.
And probably she’s a model.  During a shooting.
So, please don’t use those pics as an excuse to take photos as we stated above, because really, it’s not allowed.

I had a great time in Dubai and I learnt a lot. So this is a destination that I strongly recommend. Actually I can’t wait to go there for the second time!

L’autunno è arrivato! E di una cosa possiamo essere sicuri è che  è ora di cominciare a pianificare il vostro viaggio a Dubai, perché dicembre e gennaio sono i mesi migliori per viaggiare in quest’area.

Già vi vedo mentre sognate di passeggiare attraverso la Marina, osservando I grattacieli, o di scattare foto del Burj Al-Arab dalla spiaggia, o ancora di salire fino in cima al Burj Khalifa dopo una giornata passata al Dubai Mall.
Ok, allora è arrivato il momento di cambiare la vostra valuta in Dirham e volare negli Emirati!
So che si trovano moltissimi di questi articoli on line, ma li ho letti e personalmente devo dire che non li ho trovati veramente completi. Quindi ho deciso di scrivere questa breve guida basata sulla mia esperienza personale perché voglio darvi dei consigli su quanto ho visto e fatto, in modo che possiate anche voi avere la stessa bellissima esperienza da ogni punto di vista che ho avuto io a suo tempo.

Cominciamo!

#1 Pensate a cosa indosserete e a dove lo indosserete

Andare in giro rispettando le regole sociali su cosa non mostrare non significa essere avvolte in un mantello. Ciò che conta davvero è coprire scollatura, gomiti, ginocchia. Non è difficile, vero? Tutto quello che davvero dovete fare è ricordarvene in anticipo quando preparate la valigia.
Ve lo consiglio perché non facciate lo stesso errore della ragazza italiana che ho conosciuto durante un tour nella città vecchia, che per potervi partecipare si ritrovò a dover indossare la giacca da pioggia per coprire la t-shirt stretch senza maniche! Era una giornata decisamente calda, quindi non è stata proprio un’esperienza divertente per lei. Inoltre questo ha rovinato la sua visita al quartiere storico e a una moschea.
Ancora mi domando perché si sia portata dietro una giacca da pioggia in Medio Oriente, comunque.

#2 Al momento dei saluti imitate i locali!

La questione delle strette di mano è qualcosa a cui conviene prestare attenzione. In generale va benissimo stringersi la mano al primo saluto o alle presentazioni, non ve ne è bisogno invece al momento del congedo. Voi attenetevi a un’unica regola di base: fatelo solo dopo che i locali hanno fatto la  prima mossa. Questo funziona sia con gli uomini che con le donne. E anche con le ragazze che incontrerete sulla metro che vi daranno spontaneamente consigli su cosa vedere nel quartiere.
Alla fine siamo in Asia, e se non dovete inchinarvi come in Giappone, conviene comunque fare attenzione a queste sottili regole.

#3 Non dovete essere eleganti tutto il tempo

Siate pratiche, e ricordatevene quando farete la valigia. Non commettete l’errore di pensare che dovrete sempre indossare abiti eleganti tutto il tempo, a meno che non vi siate abituate naturalmente. Gli Emirati sono una meta turistica, soprattutto Dubai, e ci sono così tante cose da visitare. Sarete spesso in movimento,  e userete i mezzi pubblici per via delle lunghe distanze. Quindi non fatevi spaventare dall’aura di vita di lusso di questa metropoli, e mettete in valigia un paio di sneaker o dei sandali bassi!

Annotazione importante: ragazze, divertitevi a viaggiare nel vagone della metro dedicato alle donne, è divertente! Ragazzi, non entrate in quel vagone a me meno che non stiate accompagnando la vostra moglie incinta con carrozzina. Questo perché alcune signore chiamano la polizia se non uscite subito. E fidatevi, c’è un guardia a ogni fermata che chiama i controllori all’istante, e le multe vengono fatte spesso e volentieri!

#4 Preparatevi a stare al fresco

Abiterete per un po’ in una città che si è sviluppata moto vicino ad un deserto, anche se è facile dimenticarsene: questo significa che, a meno che non ci andiate nei mesi da me consigliati, passere forzatamente molto tempo all’interno di hotel, ristoranti, mall.
Vi assicuro che l’aria condizionata può essere molto alta oltre che continua! Ottima ragione per portarvi dietro la pashmina o iniziare a indossarne una. Fra l’altro vi sarà molto utile (v. punto 1).

#5 Tutti amiamo la moda, ma…

Non scattate foto (e non statele a fissare insistentemente) alle signore del posto! Lo so, lo so, le signore indossano abiti tradizionali che sono fatti in stoffe, nere, ma firmate dai più grandi stilisti internazionali, con interessanti loghi ricamati, e a volte addirittura sono chiusi sul dietro con un laccio con un (vero) diamantino. Amiamo tutti la moda, ma non è una  buona ragione per scattare foto alle signore nei mall!
Oltretutto sarebbe non permesso – non strettamente proibito, ma è comunque cosa da non fare.

Altra importante annotazione: sono consapevole che obietterete che si vedono on line le immagini di una modella che indossa un foulard di marca coloratissimo a mo’ di ḥijāb  mentre fa acquisti. Ripeto, è uno shooting, non è la realtà di Dubai. Non usate quel servizio fotografico come scusa per scattare foto quando invece non si può!

Siete mai state negli Emirati? Io sinceramente non vedo l’ora di tornare a Dubai perché mi a davvero colpito. Si tratta di una destinazione affascinante da cui ho anche imparato molto su come gira il mondo in questi anni…
Sono sicura che, se decidete di andare, la vostra esperienza sarà sicuramente tranquilla e piacevole.
