Fashion Trends F/W 2020/21: Ruffles

This is the first article about the fashion trends for the season. I decided that I wanted to select some of them and help you wearing them thoughout the upcoming fall and winter. We’ll start by talking about ruffles. We’ve seen this trend around for a very long time, but I do feel that this time we are watching something slightly different than the past seasons. Let’s see why.

We all think about ruffles and we immediately have a vision of romantic, dreamy outfits. Some of us may have some Lady D wedding dress vibes.
But the ruffles that I have seen on the catwalks are so different from this.
First of all, Prada put them on the blouses and dresses. They are small, minimalist, like interesting details that define a line and give the outfit some multiplicity of possible interpretations. Like wanting to put some femininity in a serious, essential outfits.

Chanel and Celine

Chanel put some ruffles on blouses and skirts, but not worn together. I think that here we’re seeing the tentative to insert  some curves and frilly details in an outfit that is very dynamic, definitely for daytime. Black and white are the colors, everything in these ruffles speaks about practicality and easy to wear garments. Do you remember how Coco literally created the little black dress for the first working women?

Celine

Celine is way more feminine but not flirty. Ruffles here are incorporated in some beautiful blouses worn in a 2 pieces outfit that is perfect for a smart business attire dress code. So, again, we see practicality and not a single note of dreamy mood.

How can we actually wear Ruffles?

I would say that we are seeing some kind of evolution in the ruffles outfits. They are conceived in a new way, approchable and wearable. This is why I think that we can easily insert them in our daytime attire. Wearing them in a very balanced way is actually possible!
Of course I wouldn’t wear them in the corporate dress code as they tend to be distracting and a little bit too much. But they can go well in an office, like in a Smart Business and Business Casual dress code, and maybe not in a dress or a skirt but definitely it’s a yes on a blouse!

Perfect for a romantic personality ad a very feminine style, they can make a great detail even if theoretically it’s not your cup of tea. Just imagine them  worn under a waist tight business jacket. Think of the lines. This is exactly what Miuccia did!

How to use Ruffles strategically

Every time I do a shopping tour or a wardrobe analysis, at a certain point, all the clients ask this: does this garment make me look good? Is this the right style for me and my lifestyle? This is what probably most of you are thinking!
Well, let’s see how to use ruffles and who are the women they make look great!

Ruffles optically create volume, and they also tend to catch the attention.
Use them when:

  • you want to have real volume in order to create a balance among the upper part and the lower part of an outfit. Busty girls wouldn’t probably be enhanced by this detail, that would be “too much happening” on the upper part.
  • you want to draw attention on your strong points. A skirt with ruffles can highlight your legs, or can show off your chest if you are wearing a very basic pair of trousers.

Fashion Trends F/W 2020/21: Ruffles

Cominceremo dalle ruches.

Veniamo a Celine!

È possibile indossarle in modo stilisticamente bilanciato. Perché inserite in outfit avvicinabili e indossabili.

A chi sta bene e come usarle strategicamente
