My Tips for Your Holiday In Puglia

I’ve recently been in Puglia for the very first time in my life (and this is weird if you think that I live in Italy). It was a great experience as I immediately fell in love with the views – and this happened as just as I arrived in the area. I remember saying “how beautiful” when I firstly saw the skyline of the town I was about to stay in, San Marco la Catola, near Foggia, and this happened when I still was on board of the transfer car. It really felt like being in a sort of fairy tale place!

My Stay at Relais San Pietro

Firstly I have to tell you about the hotel. Relais San Pietro. I enjoyed my stay there although I did not spend much time there, as I only left in the morning after my breakfast and went back in the evening for sleeping. Our schedule was very busy actually. But it was super comfortable and cute!

The rooms are very traditional and well furnished with lovely pieces of furniture, some of those come from local artisans.

They have a lovely swimming pool though I wasn’t obviously able to actually use it, as i was always wandering around! Take a second to think about how beautiful is swimming in such a quiet and peaceful setting – because yes, this super cute hotel is really far away from the all your troubles and all the noise of any city life. I remember that apart from being enthusiastic about exploring some new places every day, every time I was so sorry of leaving!

Why Staying in this area and the Things You Can Do

I  really think this is the perfect destination for those who want to relax and mentally reset by spending some time with their loved ones, but thinking you might be get bored I really think you might be wrong.

There are plenty of nice activities you can do and places that are great for those who love food and wine (if you read my blog you definitely are one of those). I think you could be positively surprised by how much the traditional recipes and products from  Puglia can offer.

I strongly suggest keeping as a landmark for your holiday the town of San Marco la Catola, as you’re about to leave and find all the places from there. San Marco la Catola is a super cute town that I strongly suggest visiting, because of the lovely streets and monuments and because of the amazing views you’ll be able to admire there. But now, here are some places where to have great food and some wines in the surroundings!

Locanda Bosco San Cristoforo

I would like to start with the first place I discovered, that happens to also be my favorite one: Locanda Bosco San Cristoforo. It’s basically a restaurant with traditional and local food , typical food from the area in Puglia we are talking about. It is in a great location, because it’s in a green area near a  grove – that makes it perfect for recovering from a hot day for lunch or for spending a nice evening al fresco.

The owner also is a wine maker so I recommend tasting the wines.

I loved the way the owner was great at telling us stories about the legends and traditions of the local area.! I’m not really sure about how he speaks English, but you shouldn’t let this stop you from a very good food experience.

L’Avellaneta  

 

L’Avellaneta is a real Holiday farm, I mean it’s a place where they have not only their vegetable garden, but they also have the farm animals. So forget the cute Umbria-like farms where you basically get a restaurant in the countryside. This is the real thing!

L’Avellaneta is a white beautiful building where you can taste some delicious products and dishes and it is also a nice place where to spend some time in Summer, because they have a gorgeous panoramic view swimming pool. I bet this part of Puglia region has some amazing panoramas!

Please keep in mind that they can provide riding lessons. I personally tried myself, and note that it was my very first time. The things i do for my readers! It was a very good experience, and I loved the horse – she was very quiet and calm, so the experience was absolutely smooth and enjoyable!

Chalet San Cristoforo  

This is basically the place you go to for having the typical Italian aperitivo (with local products, food in Puglia is a very serious thing) . But here you won’t get the average aperitivo. This is  the place for an aperitivo in the woods! We spent here some time before a dinner, after a very hot day spent walking around and it was the perfect location for chilling and recharging before the evening. I really think you shouldn’t miss their Spritz because it’s absolutely perfect. I was about to pass on the drinks, but a local told me this and he was absolutely right.

Ok I think we’re done with your food options. But before closing the article i would like to say a big THANK YOU to Cooperativa Gran Burrone (they named their business from the Italian name for Rivendell) because they accompanied us in a great trekking experience and it was sooo fun! Please note that I had some trekking experiences in the past, so it was quite smooth for me and I naturally enjoyed every part of it.

Recentemente sono stata in Puglia per la prima volta. È stata un’esperienza eccezionale, dal momento che spesso in questi casi sono molto più focalizzata sul registrare i luoghi e le nozioni più che sull’esperienza stessa, ma in realtà non appena sono arrivata sono rimasta subito colpita dai panorami e dal territorio. Mi ha anche colpito la posizione del paese dove eravamo diretti, San Marco la Catola, ancora quando ero a bordo del transfer. Arrivare quasi al crepuscolo mi ha procurato l’effetto “fiaba”!

Il Relais San Pietro

Per cominciare mi sembra giusto parlare dell’hotel dove ho alloggiato, il Relais San Pietro. Il mio soggiorno là è stato molto piacevole anche se alla fine ci ho passato pochissimo tempo visto che vi ho alloggiato solo per dormire e fare colazione velocemente al mattino! Infatti gli impegni quotidiani non sono stati pochi.

Le stanze sono molto tradizionali, con colori riposanti, bene arredate e con mobili che in alcuni casi provengono dalle botteghe di artigiani locali. 

L’hotel ha una bella piscina che ovviamente non ho sfruttato perché sono sempre stata in giro! Ma provate a prendervi qualche secondo per pensare a come possa essere nuotare in uno scenario così tranquillo e pacifico – perché credo proprio che il vantaggio maggiore di alloggiare in questo hotel sia il fatto che è lontano da tutto, soprattutto compresi il rumore e il caos. Ricordo che tutte le mattina, mentre aspettavamo il driver, ero entusiasta di vedere posti nuovi, ma mi dispiaceva lasciare quel posto così tranquillo.

Penso che sia la destinazione perfetta per coloro che desiderano rilassarsi e passare del tempo con la famiglia, ma se pensate che potrebbe diventare noioso vi sbagliate.

Infatti ci sono parecchie cose che potete fare a parte abbronzarvi, e molte di queste coinvolgono l’essere appassionati di food e vini (e se leggete il mio blog lo siete anche voi!).

Io vi suggerisco di prendere come punto di riferimento il paese di San Marco la Catola, dal momento che sarà facile partire da lì e trovare le seguenti località partendo da questo punto di riferimento.

San Marco la Catola è un paese molto grazioso che suggerisco di visitare. Questo non solamente perché è decisamente bello da vedere e fotografare, ma anche perle viste e i panorami che ammirerete.

Locanda Bosco San Cristoforo.

Voglio cominciare con il primo posto che abbiamo scoperto, che peraltro è per l’appunto anche il mio preferito la Locanda Bosco San Cristoforo. Di base si tratta di una trattoria casalinga che serve piatti locali della tradizione, però non è in un centro cittadino bensì in un’area verde nei pressi di un bosco, e questo è un fattore molto interessante. Infatti è il posto perfetto per pranzare se volete fuggire da una giornata molto calda, o per passare una serata al fresco.

Il proprietario produce anche vino che consiglio di assaggiare. La cosa singolare è che ama raccontare storie legate alla leggenda e al fantastico della tradizione locale! Non

L’Avellaneta  

L’Avellaneta è il vero tipico agriturismo, e con questo intendo dire che non è un ristorante con un piccolo orto, cosa assai comune oggi, bensì un posto con orto e allevamento di animali da fattoria.

Dimenticate gli agriturismi “stile Umbria” che alla fine sono un ristorante in campagna. Questo è vero!

L’Avellaneta ha come base una bella costruzione bianca in mezzo alla campagna, dove potrete non soltanto alloggiare, ma anche assaggiare prodotti e soprattutto piatti deliziosi. Si tratta di un posto molto piacevole dove passare del tempo, anche perchè ha una bella piscina panoramica, con una vista davvero niente male.

Non va dimenticato che qui è possibile prendere lezioni di equitazione. Io ho provato l’esperienza personalmente, ed è stata la mia primissima volta a cavallo. Che cosa non farei per i miei lettori! È stata un’esperienza molto positiva, e ho adorato il cavallo – era molto tranquilla, quindi l’esperienza è andata benissimo!

Chalet San Cristoforo  

Lo Chalet San Cristoforo di base è il tipico posto dove andresti, come diciamo a Firenze a “frescheggiare”, e per fare l’aperitivo. Però non è il tipico aperitivo in piazzetta della città, è un aperitivo che prendi letteralmente nei boschi! Noi abbiamo passato un paio d’ore là prima di una cena, dopo una giornata molto calda passata a camminare, ed è stato il posto perfetto per rilassarsi e ricaricarsi prima della serata.

Il mio consiglio è di non perdervi il loro spritz, perché era assolutamente perfetto. Quella sera avevo deciso di evitare gli alcolici, ma il consiglio è arrivato da un local che aveva assolutamente ragione!
