Bologna : a Winter Shopping Guide

I mostly write about shopping in the European capitals, but some weeks ago I had a nice stroll in Bologna with a friend and I also took some pics in some beautiful places. I am aware of the fact that Christmas is in the past, but I want to talk about these places anyway. Besides,  some of these tips are still good!

Galleria Cavour: the luxury shopping district

I’ll start by telling about a gorgeous bolognese district, the Quadrilatero, where you can find many good small shops and boutiques. You really should explore this area. But what I mostly want to talk about is Galleria Cavour, a luxury shopping gallery that is located in the heart of the city near the Quadrilatero. It’s probably very well known, but it was my first time there and I was amazed. Keep in mind it was Christmas time and the festive installations were just magic.
It certainly is the place if you want to have some designers shopping but I bet it’s great to go daydreaming in front of those gorgeous windows at every time of the year! It’s sort of indoor because in Bologna streets you have the portico to keep you safe from wind and rain in winter. In Galleria Cavour it’s even cozier.

Borgo delle Tovaglie: my favorite concept store ever

The most fascinating discover of the day was Borgo delle Tovaglie, a very classy and cool concept store in the heart of the city. During the festive time I had the opportunity to see their wonderful installations, and we all know it’s normal to see rich embellishments at Christmas time, neverthless they were very stylish and fascinating – I can say this as an insider.
I personally love their houseware,interiors and home fragrances collections, assembled with great taste.
Shopping tip: as I said above, their Christmas decorations selection was just great, so just try to keep in mind this for the future, as the prices were affordable.

La Torinese 1888: eat, drink, learn some history

This is good spot for a stop and a good espresso. But it’s also a very special, historical place. For those readers who are not  from Italy: here we saw one of the first Italian candid camera shows ever, because the  actor Nannyi Loi, who is from Rome, acted as a customer who used to help himself at other people’s cappuccinos. That was quite fun, as you could see the difference among his fake intrusive behavior and the the clients that reacted with great aplomb.
This small but lovely bar has a very good pastry selection. They decided I had to taste their cream hot chocolate. The cream here is somehow special, because has a 38% of fat that makes it very rich and it is hand whipped with a whisk.
They also have a trattoria with a solid Bolognese tradition. Apart from the local foods they also have a collection of recipes that the owners  inherited from their grandmas.

As you already know, this blog is mainly abot leisure, bt I feel I need to write come historical facts here. This previously used to be a corn seeds shop that  later became a chocolate shop during the Savoia era. This happened because at that time  the Savoia family allowed and authorised  the chocolate trade; this royal family  was from Torino, this is why the bar is called La Torinese.

French Christmas Market: can’t wait to be there again!

We all love Christmas markets! But every year in Bologna there is a market that really stands out from the rest. it’s the French Christmas Market and it’s elegant, beautiful, it especially has an impeccable food selection. Obviously there are the French wines– who needs beer in such a market? At lunch we went for something that isn’t French, a paella as I was with a vegetarian friend (I saw many veggie options!). Of course next year I will should try some French food – that looked delicious. How long does it takes to Christmas time? Because I can’t wait to get there again.

Have you ever been in Bologna? Food is great, but you really should try the fashion shopping options. Would you tell any story about destinations that are famous for some feature but, when you visited, you discovered they had so much more to discover beyond that reason?

Di solito parlo delle capitali europee, ma recentemente  mi è capitato di fare una splendida passeggiata a Bologna, e ho anche scattato qualche foto in alcuni posti bellissimi. Il Natale ormai è passato, ma credo che i consigli siano sempre validi!

Galleria Cavour: la zona dello shopping di lusso

Cominciamo con una zona bellissima, una galleria commerciale del lusso che si trova proprio nel cuore della città. Forse alcuni di voi già la conoscono, ma per me è stata la prima visita in assoluto e mi ha rapito perché ci sono passata nel periodo natalizio. Sicuramente adatto per chi cerca lo shopping delle grandi firme, ma credo che sia un bel posto per sognare davanti alle vetrine.
Probabilmente molto interessante anche  la zona del Quadrilatero, dove si trovano molti negozi interessanti, e che vi invito ad esplorare.

Borgo delle Tovaglie: il mio concept store preferito

La scoperta più interessante della giornata è stata Borgo delle Tovaglie, che  è un concept store molto raffinato; oltretutto nel periodo natalizio ho potuto ammirare degli allestimenti straordinari, ricchi come per ogni negozio a tema natalizio, ma molto raffinati – lo dico da “addetta ai lavori”.
Io ho adorato la loro selezione di complementi d’arredo e fragranze per la casa, molto raffinata.
Shopping tip:  la selezione di addobbi e complementi puramente festivi è straordinariamente fornita e molo elegante, ma soprattutto non ha dei prezzi eccessivi che ci potrebbero immaginare.

La Torinese 1888: oltre al food, un po’ di storia

Questo bar è molto speciale. Infatti, e molti se lo ricordano, fu sede negli anni 60 di una delle prime candid camera, forse la più famosa, con l’attore Nanni  Loi. La gag prevedeva che l’attore si servisse del cappuccino di qualche ignaro cliente!
Questo piccolo ma raffinato bar oggi ha una selezione di pasticceria invidiabile. Io ho provato la loro cioccolata calda con panna. La panna è molto speciale perché ha un 38% di grassi, il che la rende corposa, e inoltre viene  montata a mano con la frusta.
Hanno anche un trattoria a tradizione rigorosamente bolognese, che è davvero affascinante, perché a parte servire  prodotti del territorio servono alcune ricette che derivano dal ricettario originale delle nonne materna e paterna della proprietaria.

Lo sapete che questo blog parla soprattutto degli aspetti leisure, ma comunque ecco un po’ di storia: questo, un tempo, era un negozio di gramaglie che divenne cioccolateria ai tempi dei Savoia, i quali permisero l’export di cioccolato: da cui il nome.

Mercato di Natale Francese: è finito, ma già mi manca

Tutti amiamo i mercatini di Natale! Ma a Bologna ce n’è uno che si ripete ogni anno, ed è davvero speciale. Il mercatino francese è davvero raffinato, e c’è una selezione food molto curata. Oltretutto ci sono dei vini che potete benissimo immaginare – chi ha bisogno della birra con uno street food come questo? Noi per il lunch abbiamo provato una paella deliziosa, molto poco francese, ma ovviamente l’anno prossimo credo sia il caso di provare piatti molto più d’oltralpe!

Siete mai stati a Bologna? Hanno una grande tradizione culinaria, ma credo proprio che oltre al food sia da provare lo shopping. Avete qualche storia su località che erano famose per qualcosa in particolare ma, quando le avete visitate, vi siete resi conto che c’era molto più di quello per cui erano famose?
