A Summer evening at Il Mulino di Firenze

Yesterday evening I attended a party for the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Firenze Convention Bureau. I think it’s very important fact, as with my profession I am part of the tourism industry and this institution is not only about bringing some conventions to  Florence, but it’s about moving people from abroad and making them travel to our city, that generates business, satellite activities, growth.
So, I would also like to express here my personal congratulations to the board.

There is another reason why I want to talk about yesterday’s terrific party. The location was the amazing hotel Il Mulino di Firenze, that was launched some months ago. This hotel has a very peculiar history. It was built, after many difficulties and struggles, in a place where there used to be a real windmill near the river Arno, so that some parts of it actually are under the water level. Now it is a very fascinating and beautiful  location.

The Mayor, Mr Nardella made a short speech expressing the hope and the aim for working  the growth in the services for the reception of the international tourism. We should learn not to consider tourism as a “problem”, an issue to be solved; on the contrary, it should be seen as a great opportunity for a city like Florence, and making the reception services better can only improve our own city life, beside the travellers’ experience, of course.
The President of Firenze Convention Bureau in his speech said something that I think that should be true for everyone: working with passion is not enough, we all really need expertise and high technical skills for our jobs, because this is what makes us professionals, and it’s not only about “following our dreams”.

As I found this statement important, I hope my readers will let me here make my personal considerations and reflections about this topic.
It’s very sad that umprepared workers truly can be damaging for the area of interest they operate in.
I can unfortunately see it every day, as so many umprepared people start their new “career” in my own field and this is terrible, as they tend to change the way a profession can be perceived through their way of working without any sense and far from the international standards.
This is why I do believe we all should this to this idea!

What do you think? Would you find interesting living in a city whose economy is greatly based on international tourism? Have you ever been in Florence as a tourist? Tell me  your experience!
