The Amsterdam shopping guide – #1 De Negen Straatjes

Amsterdam is a cool European capital I had visited for the first time a couple of years ago. During my first journey I noticed that most tourists do not understand its most intriguing aspects, and never get too far from Dam Square. This is a matter of fact and can’t change! But what most people do not know is that Amsterdam can be a great place for shopping.

This is my third shopping reportage, after Dubai and Munich.  Once again, before leaving I found very many  articles about shopping in Amsterdam, and I saw that they all tend to say the same things, in a sort of never ending copy-and-paste loop. So, once again, I decided to verify if everything they said was actually true – and to understand if there’s something more than that to be discovered.

This Amsterdam shopping reportage will start by  De Negen Straatjes (the Nine Streets), that are situated among the three main canals, Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht (as you easily find out looking at any map).

Some shopping tips for De Negen Straatjes

First of all, a premise is due. In this district you are about to find several kinds of shops and boutiques, including some mainstream brands, as Marc O’ Polo and Kookai. You will also find pop-up stores next to them! That’s incredible isn’t it? There are also low profile shops, but among those small shops you can find the Nationaal Brilmuseum, the Spectacles Museum, well celebrated by many on line articles. By the way, it is also possible to have glasses shopping inside the museum. Couldn’t visit unfortunately, it was closing time. For what I’ve seen, I guess my readers may find this place a little odd and peculiar, considering our themes.
A short note about one of the many cafés in this area. You’ll read a lot about Pompadour, too. Well, in this case I think the bloggers are right. Pompadour is a Patisserie, Chocolaterie and Tea room. And it’s, well, gorgeous. To be honest I couldn’t taste anything (I was in a detox phase) but you only have to look at the pics that I took to understand why it’s so famous. OK internet writers, you were right here. The window is just divine – and not only that, I suppose.

So, in this district the styles, the moods, are very diversified from one another,  but they have one thing in common: the prices generally are affordable. So this aspect makes this area the perfect place if you are looking for edgy fashion shopping and want to discover local brands.

I am very much severe and goal oriented while evaluating a shop, especially when it comes to my job, that’s why I rarely find them really amazing. But here this happened.

Why I adore ATELIERAMSTRDM

Everything you find in this boutique was created by their designer; don’t be fooled by the small window on the street (so glad I didn’t), its interiors are beautiful and spacious, the shop girl was adorable and all the time she was very keen in giving information and she is supported a great assistant: her name is Juicy, but you can call her Juz.
Note to self: stop living pets names from the Potterverse and start with fashion designer names. Next adopted stray cat’s name will be Dolce.

Apart from the style and the lines of the collection, the quality of the silks was astonishing and what I loved most were the prints, that are hand painted.
The collection’s identity is modern and metropolitan and this makes it easily mixable in many style contexts, it’s trend conscious but sophisticated because ever maintaining a minimalist charm.
Remember that you will also find a remarkable selection of sunglasses inside.
I think my evaluation goes beyond my personal taste, as this is the boutique where I would not only buy for myself, but where I would feel confident when accompanying a shopping client – I think this makes the difference and says it all.

None of these shops knew I would write about them, and I decided to quote them independently to give my readers what I consider useful information about the district; I obviously didn’t get any fee for writing. I didn’t take any pic inside the shops as I wouldn’t  consider this fair, as I did not inform anyone that I was a blogger.

Amsterdam è una città che avevo già visitato due anni fa. Durante il mio primo soggiorno notai che la maggior parte dei turisti non comprendono I suoi aspetti più affascinanti, e non si allontanano da Piazza dam. Questo è un dato di fatto e non credo che cambierà mai! Ma quello che sfugge a moltissime persone è che Amsterdam è anche una città ottima per lo shopping.

Questo è il mio terzo reportage, dopo quello su Dubai e su Monaco di Baviera. Ancora una volta, prima di partire sono andata a leggermi I tantissimi articoli sullo shopping ad Amsterdam e ho visto che tutti tendevano a dire sempre le solite cose, in una specie di loop infinito di notizie copiaincollate. Quindi, ancora una volta, ho deciso di verificare se tutto ciò che si legge fosse proprio aderente al vero – e soprattutto per capire se ci fosse qualcosa in più da scoprire di quello che ho letto in giro.

Alcune dritte per lo shopping nelle Nove Strade

Prima di tutto, una doverosa introduzione. In quest’area troverete diversi tipi di negozi e boutique, inclusi anche dei brand più mainstream, come per esempio  Marc O’ Polo e Kookai. Troverete anche pop-up store proprio lì vicino. È una cosa difficile da immaginare se non la si vede dal vero!  Ci sono anche negozi di più basso profilo, ma proprio in mezzo a questi potete incappare nel Nationaal Brilmuseum, il Museo degli Occhiali da Vista, che fra l’altro è molto celebrato negli articoli che avevo letto. A proposito, è anche possibile acquistare delle montature all’interno del museo stesso. Sfortunatamente non l’ho potuto visitare, perché sono capitata  lì proprio nell’orario di chiusura. Per quanto ho visto, comunque, credo che i lettori abituali del blog poterebbero trovarlo un po’ alieno dalle atmosfere relativamente a cui siamo soliti interessarci.
Avrete probabilmente letto anche voi gli articoli su Pompadour. Beh, in questo caso i blogger hanno ragione. Pompadour è una pasticceria, cioccolateria e sala da tè. Ed è un posto semplicemente splendido. Per essere onesta non ho assaggiato nulla (ahimè, ero in fase detox), ma credo che basti guardare la foto della vetrina per comprendere perché sia così famoso. Ok scrittori del web, qui avevate ragione, il posto è splendido  – e credo proprio non solo nell’aspetto.

Quindi avrete già capito che in questo quartiere gli stili, le atmosfere, sono estremamente diversificati, ma hanno una cosa in comune, se vogliamo: i prezzi in generale non sono della fascia più alta. Questo significa che potrebbe essere la zona perfetta per cercare la moda più edgy e scoprire i brand locali, cosa che io ho fatto, ma senza preoccuparsi eccessivamente dei prezzi.

Io sono molto severa quando si tratta di valutare un negozio, specialmente quando si tratta di lavoro, ed è per questo che raramente li trovo davvero notevoli. Ma qui è avvenuto davvero.

Perché mi è piaciuto ATELIERAMSTRDM

Tutto quello che troverete in questa boutique è stato creato dal loro designer; non lasciatevi ingannare dal fatto che le vetrine sulla strada siano  piccole (sono stata molto felice di non averlo fatto), perché gli interni sono molto belli e spaziosi, e la commessa è stata assolutamente adorabile per tutto il tempo (non poco) che sono stata lì, e molto generosa nel dare informazioni; è anche supportata da un’assistente molto particolare: il suo nome è Juicy (da Juicy Cotuture) ma potete chiamarla Juz.
Nota per me: smettere di dare ai gatti che adotto nomi dal Potterverse e cominciare con I fashion designer. La prossima gatta che adotto si chiamerà Dolce.

A parte lo stile e le linee della collezione, la qualità delle sete era strabiliante, e l’aspetto che ho amato di più sono state le stampe, che erano dipinte a mano.

L’identità di tutta la collezione è decisamente cosmopolita, e questo la rende facilmente mixabile in molti contesti, è sicuramente up to date ma sofisticata, perché mantiene sempre un’attitudine minimalista.

Penso che in questo caso la mia valutazione vada oltre il mio gusto personale, dato che questa è la tipica  boutique dove non solo comprerei per me stessa, ma dove mi sentirei sicura nell’accompagnare un cliente – questo credo proprio che faccia la differenza e la dica tutta.

Nessuno di questi negozi o luoghi sapeva che avrei scritto su di loro, e ho deciso di parlarne in modo indipendente per dare ai miei lettori quelle che considero informazioni interessanti su questa zona della città. Naturalmente non ricevo alcun fee per questo articolo.
Non ho scattato foto all’interno dei negozi perché non lo considererei corretto, visto che fra l’altro non ho informato nessuno del fatto che avrei scritto sul blog.
