The Real Guide to Shopping in Munich – what the Guides don’t tell you #4: Douglas, Maelu and much more

This is the fourth part of my Munich shopping guide; here you can find the first, the second and the third part of the reportage.

Douglas – yes, it’s a great shopping place, here’s why

We all know the Douglas beauty chain. I think just a few of us can say they never bought anything in one of these beautiful boutiques.  But, strangely, all the on line guides and travel bloggers keep telling us that this one in Theatinerstraße is SO special. The thing is, they never really say why, so I decided to go there personally to discover.

First of all it is true that it is a huge shop on several floors, with the typically renowned  Douglas-like great variety of good brands, and that was not a surprise at all.
I obviously didn’t find there the same offers that were in Italy, so this was the first lovely and appreciated detail that I experienced.

In fact it was the only place where I had a great shopping session (apart from the one in Ludwig Beck, but I had shopping there because I actually was COLD).

And now, the unexpected part; the shop girls are amazingly kind and helpful, and very highly skilled. Not only that: I also noticed that they will never discourage the choice or the trying of a good product even if it is not necessarily the most expensive in the shop. And above all they will never push you to try a product as soon they understand that you don’t like it – I had to choose a palette and I don’t use shimmer eyeshadows – they were very attentive to that in giving me advice.
I really do think that this is, sadly,  very rare. But this is what I found.

Besides this, the Christmas interior decorations were appealing and fun, and they gave a sensation of not-cheap and not-tacky atmosphere. Just loved it!
The shop girls speak a very good English, everything at the moment of the payment worked smoothly and even pleasantly as all the rest, and, with my surprise, I received lots of free samples, and please note that I am not a habitue – and they didn’t know that I was about to write about the experience. I have to specify that I had bought a good amount of things, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to get them.
Is it enough as an ideal of perfection?

MAELU, the cafè with great pastry in the heart of the city

MAELU is a cafè and maybe not the biggest in town, but definitely it is great for what they serve.

I think the fact that it’s not in any on line guide or blog review I checked before leaving is so strange, and honestly, I can’t explain. In fact, it was me who made this great find, just because I was attracted by the marvellous colors of the cakes in the window.

This wonderful place is very well known by the locals, but you can see on the socials that is loved by anyone who  has had the experience of being there. It seems that the most popular cake is the beautiful pistachio tart (Pistazien Törtchen), it surely is the most photogenic one!
If you want to sit at this beautiful cafè you’d better make a booking – but remember that at Saturdays and Sundays this is not possible.

Segafredo Espresso Bar, for a perfect espresso

This reportage about Munich is going to be over soon, so I’m telling you everything I have somehow left apart till now. An italian expat in Munich told me a very well kept secret: the best espresso is served at the Segafredo Espresso Bar in  Residenzstrasse 21, just in front of the Residenz.

Seen from the outside it seems to be sort of a corridor at the entrance of a palace, in fact it is quite small bar and it might not be immediatly recognized, but the Italian-style coffe they serve is actually great. She also told me that  their toasts are perfect, thought I did not try them. Don’t know if this may be interesting for you, but espresso + toast is my usual comfy food, so I think this could be a good tip!

Hirmer is a department store dedicated  to menswear that, just before you ask me,  unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to visit, alas! Shame on me, as I even knew it was a great place because I had been told about that by fashion insiders, and even the locals and expats reproached me for this gap!

Giannis – because I know my readers just love good food

I would like to share one last food tip, because you all seem to be quite curious into  this subject. Do not ask me why, I had a delicious dinner at Ottobrunn in an Italian-Greek restaurant (and I never, ever go to Italian restaurants when travelling abroad).

The truth is, the other girls wanted to eat Italian, and Giannis has a very good reputation on the web.
To be really honest, I ordered German dishes – everything I ordered was delightful.
We did not even find a single tourist there – we were the only ones not to be German.
The waiters speak Italian, if this is a useful notion for you.

Originally, I wasn’t about to review this restaurant, this is why I don’t have many photos of it, BUT I do believe you have to see how a simple fruit salad is served, because I want to communicate the quality of the service from every point of view; this was not the dessert I ordered, but I found myself wanting it so badly, and so the others at our table, this is why I took this pic.

They don’t seem to have a website, but here is sort of a Facebook page – in which I had to insert their correct address and phone number myself… This can only mean they work on a very good and diffused “word of mouth” and get many good reviews! Good job, Giannis!

Do you know that last-day-of-school feeling? This is going to be the last post about Munich, this is why I’m feeling sad because it feels like leaving this place for real, so I’m posting some random pics just for the love of it, and for sharing some beautiful experiences with you.

Ecco la quarta parte della mia guida allo shopping a Monaco di Baviera; potete leggere qui la prima parte della guida e la seconda, che erano più dedicate alla moda, e qui la terza, con diverse annotazioni dedicate al  food.

 

La Profumeria Douglas di Theatinerstraße è davvero un posto grandioso per lo shopping. Vediamo perché!

Tutti conosciamo la catena di profumeria Douglas. Quasi tutti ne abbiamo frequentata almeno una. Eppure, le guide on line e i blogger ne consigliano una in particolare, quella in Theatinerstraße. A me sembrava davvero strano, anche perché non ne viene specificato il motivo, quindi sono andata a scoprirlo di persona.

Intanto è davvero un negozio molto grande e straordinariamente ben fornito. Ovviamente, non ci sono gli stessi prodotti e le stesse offerte che si trovano in Italia, anzi potreste restare positivamente stupiti. In effetti è uno dei motivi per cui ho ceduto e ho fatto shopping da loro.
Le commesse sono di una gentilezza squisita, e sono tutte molto ben preparate. Non solo: ho notato che non scoraggiano  la prova di un ottimo prodotto anche se non è necessariamente il più caro in negozio. Udite udite, se capiscono che non usi un certo tipo di prodotto NON cercheranno mai di forzare l’acquisto, in alcuna maniera. Vi rendete conto vero, che si tratta di un pregio enorme – e purtroppo mi spiace dirlo, ma in certi casi più unico che raro?
Oltre a ciò, la “ricchezza” dell’esposizione natalizia era molto suggestiva ma non kitsch. Le commesse parlavano tutte un ottimo inglese, la cassa funzionava alla perfezione come il resto del negozio, benché non fossi cliente abituale mi hanno dato abbondanti campioni (beh avevo speso, ma non è necessariamente un obbligo) e…  devo aggiungere altro o vi basta come ideale di perfezione? Insomma qui le guide ci hanno preso.

MAELU, il caffè pasticceria da sogno nel cuore della città

MAELU è un caffè pasticceria non molto grande, ma grandioso per quello che offre. Mi è sembrato molto strano che un posto così fosse fuori dalle rotte consigliate, e francamente ancora oggi non me lo spiego. Infatti l’ho scoperto da sola, attratta dai colori stupendi della vetrina.

Si tratta di un caffè che in realtà è molto ben conosciuto dai local, ma che conquista tutti, e questo lo si può vedere chiaramente seguendoli sui social. Pare che la tortina che va per la maggiore sia quella al pistacchio (Pistazien Törtchen), almeno così si dice! Da MAELU dovete prenotare – ma attenzione: il sabato e la domenica non accettano prenotazioni.

Segafredo Espresso Bar, per chi ha nostalgia del vero espresso

E ora, visto che siamo alla fine del reportage, un po’ di consigli in ordine sparso, ovvero tutto quello che fino ad ora non ho scritto.

Un’expat italiana mi ha dato una dritta davvero interessante: il miglior caffè espresso è servito al
indirizzo Residenzstrasse 21, insomma praticamente davanti al Residenz.
Sembra un corridoio di accesso a un palazzo, il locale infatti è piccolo e potrebbe non essere subito riconoscibile se visto dall’esterno, ma all’interno il caffè è davvero strepitoso. Fra l’altro non ho provato ma pare siano specializzati nel fare toast eccezionali – ma io sono di parte, perché espresso e toast sono il mio confy food per eccellenza!

Questo è un department store dedicato all’abbigliamento maschile che, prima che me lo chiediate,  purtroppo non ho potuto visitare, ahimè! Mea culpa! Lo conoscevo di fama per averlo sentito menzionare da parte di addetti ai lavori, e local ed expat mi hanno rimproverato per questa mancanza.

Giannis – perchè ho capito che ai miei lettori il food di qualità interessa molto

Giannis è un ristorante dove ho mangiato in un normale sabato sera. Vi do un’ultima dritta sul food, perché mi dite tutti che l’argomento vi interessa. Senza contare che ai lettori italiani potrebbe interessare un posto dove ordinare italiano.

Non chiedetemi perché, ma una sera per cena sono finita a Ottobrunn in un ristorante italo-greco. La verità è che le altre ragazze volevano mangiare italiano, e Giannis ha una ottima fama sul web. La verità è che io ho ordinato cibo tedesco, ed era più che ottimo – e non c’era un solo turista, anzi eravamo le uniche straniere.

Non ho fotografato molto perché originariamente non intendevo recensirlo, ma dovete assolutamente vedere come una semplice macedonia viene presentata. Naturalmente non ho ordinato io questo dessert, ho provato una specialità locale, ma ho invidiato la ragazza che l’ha scelta, e ha rischiato di vedersela rubare dalle altre, da tanto era invitante!

Se non hanno un sito e dei social, significa che lavorano con una buona fama dovuta al passaparola – e ad ottime recensioni. Ottimo lavoro, Giannis!

Ho inserito anche  alcune foto di varie esperienze che ho fatto a Monaco di Baviera,  perché so che questo è l’ultimo post, e mi dispiace. Mi sono resa conto di amare davvero questa città! Avete presente come ci si sente l’ultimo giorno di scuola? Nostalgici ma leggeri. Ecco lo spirito con cui le ho scelte!
