Summer Shoes: how to look great in Espadrilles

We all know and love Espadrilles, in both version, with high wedges or flat. Lately we’ve been seeing them come in the high version from  many luxury brands, conceived in a very glam style, so that they seem to be losing their traditional carefree holiday style allure.

But as an Image Consultant I have to warn you: this is not a reason to make big dress code mistakes! Let’s see why.

A Fashion evolution through History

If your Espadrillas memories go back to the Eighties and to the basic pink candy  version, you need to know a little more. So first of all let’s have a look at their history.
The high heel Espadrille Wedges as we know them today go back to the Sixties, and were originally an idea by Yves Saint Laurent, who commissioned the creation of a modern female line of the first fashion Espadrilles to Isabel Castañer, who used to run her  historic Spanish shoe factory. Till then, the Espadrilles had been  only the low unisex popular everyday shoes. Yves Saint Laurent had the idea to create a new version of the shoe, a glamour Espadrilles line – that was successful.

How to successfully style Espadrilles

Here we are, it’s fashion tips time. How should we wear them? First of all, keep in mind that they are not business appropriate, let alone corporate style like.
I wouldn’t even recommend them for you casual Fridays at the office, as they are not even casual.
The only way to be adequate wearing your Espadrilles  in a work attire is having a profession that  allows you to be creative in your outfits and having a natural sense of fashion  to help you get a glamourous result.
I would never suggest my clients wearing Espadrilles in town, but I guess this strict dress code standard may not be the cup of tea for those who really are in love with their easy-going charm!
So, if you really want to, wear your Espadrilles in the most informal occasions matching them with hyper colorful clothes, like bayadère stripes dresses and gowns (keeping it folk but stylish!); you may even go bold and show your personality by wearing a turban to complete such a powerful outfit.
If your personality is minimalist, and you are a little bit younger, you may go for a basic match with skinny white jeans and a crop top.

Here are three outfits: the first one is for the Artsy woman who loves to dare and is not afraid to show her gipsy attitude.
The second one is all about holidays: perfect for your weekend’s seaside trip.
The third one is for the City Girl who rocks the bare shoulders top trend and just for once is about to rock a colorful foulard, too.

Tutti conosciamo e amiamo le Espadrillas, in entrambe le versioni, con zeppa alta o basse. Ultimamente le abbiamo viste uscire nella versione alta da parte di molti brand del lusso, concepite in uno stile molto glam, così che sembrano aver perso l loro tradizionale allure vacanziera e spensierata. Ma come Consulente d’Immagine devo mettervi in guardia: questa non è una ragione valida per commettere gravi errori di dress code indossandole! Vediamo perché.

La Storia della Moda e l’evoluzione delle Espadrillas

Se I vostri ricordi relative alle Espadrillas risalgono agli anni ’80, e alla versione basic in rosa caramella che si vedeva spesso in giro a quell’epoca,  avete decisamente bisogno di sapere un po’ di più sull’argomento. Quindi per prima cosa ricordiamo la loro storia.
Le Espadrillas alte che conosciamo oggi in realtà risalgono agli anni ’60 e furono originariamente un’idea di Yves Saint Laurent, che commissionò la creazione di una linea femminile moderna a Isabel Castañer, proprietaria dello storico e omonimo calzaturificio.
Fino ad allora le Espadrillas erano state soltanto una calzatura unisex popolare e per la vita di tutti i giorni ma umile. Yves Saint Laurent ebbe l’idea di creare una nuova versione di questa scarpa, una linea glamour di Espadrillas, che ebbe molto successo.

Come indossare con stile le Espadrilles

Eccoci qui, è arrivato il momento dei consigli di stile. Come dovremmo indossare le Espadrillas? Per prima cosa, ricordate che non sono scarpe da ufficio, meno ancora da stile corporate.
In ufficio non le consiglierei neanche per i Casual Friday, dal momento che non sono neppure casual.
L’unico modo per indossarle in modo adeguato in un outfit lavorativo è avere una professione che ti permetta di essere creative nei tuoi outfit, e aiuta anche l’avere un senso dello stile che ti faccia ottenere un risultato decisamente glamour.
Non suggerirei mai a una mia cliente di indossare le Espadrillas in città, ma immagino che questo dress code stretto non sia proprio adatto a tutte coloro che sono innamorate di questa scarpa e del suo fascino rilassato!
Quindi, se proprio volete indossarle in città, fatelo nelle occasioni comunque informali con abbigliamento iper colorato, come ad esempio abiti e gonne a righe  in stile  bayadère (cercando di mantenere il look folk ma stiloso!); poteste anche spingervi oltre e mostrare la vostra personalità bold indossando un turbante per completare un outfit così d’impatto.
Se invece la vostra personalità è più minimalista, e siete un po’ troppo giovani per recitare da personaggio primadonna, potreste apprezzare di più un match più basic con jeans bianchi skinny e un crop top.

3 consigli di stile per indossare le Espadrillas

Ho composto tre outfit, come spesso faccio, per vestire  tre diverse personalità.
Il primo è perfetto per la donna più eccentrica che ama osare e mostrare la sua personalità più gipsy.
Il secondo è decisamente vacanziero, perfetto per la gita al mare nel weekend. Il terzo è pensato per la City Girl  che padroneggia il trend dei top a spalle nude e che per una volta si lancia con un foulard super colorato.
